Release Date: March 6th, 2018
Summary
Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie's Reaper mother summoned forth souls.
But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, Maji was targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.
Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and stike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.
Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters, Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers--and her growing feelings for the enemy.
Review
The first paragraph is just as good as you'd expect it to be. Tomi Adeyemi's writing style is utterly fantastic and gripping, the story is intriguing and it won't let you go until the very last word.
Throughout these chapters, I kept attempting to predict how the next scene will play out, but I can never do it. This book may have some classic YA fantasy tropes, like a rage-filled protagonist that makes quick decisions and judgements, and it doesn't always end well for them and the people around them, but that's how the story moves along! You can try predicting how this book might play out, but I assure you that unless you are the author yourself, I don't think you can predict this book as well as you think you can.
The writing style is very poetic. "Courage does not always roar. Valor does not always shine." I tried to let go of this book, but I just couldn't. Let's just say that I didn't get very much sleep last night due to this book, but it was definitely worth it.
Only a few pages in, I already liked Zélie's character and I anticipated her development throught the novel. I felt attatched to these characters in some way, and hated having to flip that last page and bid them all adieu until 2019 rolls around and the sequel was in my lap.
Overall, I really enjoyed "Children of Blood and Bone" by Tomi Adeyemi and I would rate it five out of five stars, and more, if that was possible. I absolutely loved the writing, the unpredictable plot, the loveable characters--all of it as a whole. I'm so excited for the release of the sequel! Until then you can find me counting down the days!
